Macassar Ebony
The third hardest wood in the Timber tones range with a Janka hardness rating of 3220 lbf.
This is the wood of choice for many wood turners who use its black / brown striped appearance to manufacture Pool cues, knife handles, Jewelry boxes & Cabinet work.
The wood is obtained from the Diospyros Celebica tree, found on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, where it was named after their port city.
Our Macassar Ebony plectrums are manufactured from off cuts from musical instrument and furniture manufacturing.
Interesting Facts:
The trees grow to between 50 - 65ft with a trunk diameter of 1.5ft.
Macassar Ebony is very sought after due to its beautiful patterning, making it an extremely valuable timber. Many high end guitar Luthiers use Macassar ebony for backs and sides of Acoustic Guitars and Caps and necks on electric guitars.
Although Macassar Ebony is very similar in hardness to African Ebony, it is a much more open grained material. This grain pattern is usually obvious on the surface of the plectrums and affords much more grip. If used on an Acoustic guitar it will dramatically brighten the sound. If you need the hardness of Ebony but require a lighter plectrum with lots more grip try the Tri Tones plectrums.
